Fountain of Neptune

Messina

Created by Montorsi in 1557, it depicts the God Neptune holding a trident in his hand, with the monstrous Scylla and Charybdis at his feet. Due to the bombings of 1848, the statues of Neptune and Scylla were damaged and restored in 1856. They are currently preserved in the city's regional museum, while replicas of them were commissioned to Gregorio Zappalà and Letterio Subba, respectively. Initially, the fountain was located near the sea, facing the city. After the earthquake of 1908, the fountain was placed in Piazza Unità d'Italia, facing the sea.
